Restaurants

There are places to eat in Kona to please any palate. Some of our favorites are:

  • Kona Natural Foods / Deli -
We stop here every day for a mid-morning snack: their smoothies are wonderful. Our favorite drink is a mango smoothie with protein - but they have all types of island flavors available. These will hold you over til early afternoon. If smoothies aren't your thing their deli has wonderful sandwiches and they have daily specials - all excellent.

This is located right next door to the Safeway (on Henry Street).

  • Bangkok House - Thai
This restaurant was introduced to us several years ago by a friend who spent many years in Thailand. He says this is "authentic Thai". Everything we've tried has been excellent. We especially like the Larb (pronounced Laab - rhymes with Bob) - listed under salads, it is ground chicken, salty with lots of spices, served on a bed of lettuce.

For dessert, don't miss the mango with sweet sticky rice (seasonal) or try fried ice cream which is served year-round.

It is located on the corner of Palani Road and Kuakini Hwy in the King Kamehameha Mall (right across from the North Kona Shopping Center).

  • Kona Brew Pub -
This serves a sampling of pretty much everything though we highly recommend the pizza - lots of variety and all great. And, of course, their beer is good - brewed on the premises. We like to stop here on our way to the airport (going home)… With the late outbound flights if you stop at five to six you can get a great dinner and still make the flight home.

They are located in the North Kona Shopping Center at the corner of Palani Road and Kuakini Hwy.

  • Lulu's -
Also on Alii Drive, this restaurant serves all sorts of American food. While they do have burgers, they also have more down-home items such as ribs, mashed potatoes & gravy, cornbread, etc. Sounds kind of strange for a tropical place, but sometimes it hits the spot. We always hit here on our way into town - they have great MaiTai's. Our only negative is that they are quite pricey; however, they offer a great ocean view from wherever you sit in the open air atmosphere so perhaps that's what you're paying for.
  • Jameson's -
This is located on-site at Kona Magic Sands. If you're staying at Sands and want to stroll over for an evening cocktail, you can do so here. They have a great view of Magic Sands beach and of the sunsets. They're pricey too, but sometimes it's nice to just walk to dinner instead of driving. They are open for lunch on weekdays and dinner every night.
  • Killer Tacos -
This is located in the "Old Industrial" part of Kona. It's a "hole in the wall" taco stand where they make burritos and fish tacos to order. The food's great for lunch on the go. The Old Industrial area is a great place to look at all types of furniture, imports and out-of-the-way shops. Head down here if you're into those types of things.

The Old Industrial area is located on Kaiwi Street and Queen Ka'ahumanu Hwy. It's the first street after Palani when you're heading north (toward the airport). After turning left onto Kaiwi turn left onto Luhia Street. Fish Tacos is next to the Laundromat on your right. On your left is Gold's Gym (at the top of that portion of the shopping center - you can see it from the highway before you turn onto Kaiwi) - hit the gym before your tacos!!

  • Kona Inn -
This restaurant is located in town on the ocean-side at the Kona Inn Shopping Village. They have a wide variety of food choices but our main reason for going here is the ambiance. There's a real "Old Hawaii" feel here with giant ceiling fans, old woodwork and, of course, a fabulous view. You can sit back, relax and feel like you've been transported to another time where everything's a bit slower. Definitely should be one of your first stops if you're still a little wound up from the plane ride.
